Week 2

 Effective Study Skills:

Three areas that I'm strong in when it comes to studying are getting the main idea, thinking skills, and making every hour count.

Three areas I'm weaker in are creating a schedule, outlining textbooks, and the SQ3R method.

Weekly Activity Log

Project Management Basics:

Something was driven home by each of the three presentations was the importance of having a project manager on your team. A project manager will be a strong leader for you team that can help with finance and communication. They'll help operate in accordance to a work breakdown structure. Such a structure will ensure a team creates the required deliverables. Another important idea, is the use of Gantt charts. This is something I'm familiar with, as I see it a lot at work. Gantt charts help teams track progress on deliverables and the overarching project.

Previous Capstones:

    PetRecs:

PetRecs is a record keeping solution to manage the health and medical records. As a pet owner, I agree it can be difficult to records for all vet visits, medications, and vaccinations. I really liked this project. I thought the web interface was really clean and was easy to use. I don't see any places for improvement in the presentation, the video as very easy to follow and the commentary was great.

    Like A Camera:

Like A Camera is an educational website that has lessons, demonstrations, reviews, and assessments to help beginners learn photography. The project was done well. I liked that the presenters added sliders on their website so that students could interact with the images and get a thorough understanding of what each of the concepts do to images. The project can be improved potentially by tidying up the UI and giving it a more modern look.

    SPILLB:

SPILLB is an IOS app that serves as a social platform for rappers to meet, rap together, and vote on who was the best. The project seemed interesting. I like the idea of giving a platform for communities to come together. One way the project could be improved is by improving the interface of the app. I liked some of the features of the app, however at the same time it felt empty. It would be nice to see some additional functionality like a chat room, or threads. I did like however that Jasper was already planning updates for his app for new functionality.

Week 2:

In this week's OLI module, I learned what makes a good team and how as a team we can work more effectively together. Something I need to do is play a more active role in discussions by monitoring and ensuring everyone feels valued and gets an opportunity to share their ideas. Another important thing is making sure that the team feels comfortable sharing how they are feeling about what is happening and speaking up when something is on their mind.

Apart from the OLI module, this week I worked on quizzes from the lectures, as well as the Industry Analysis first draft. It took longer than I expected to get the first draft done as I was dealing with a high-grade fever over the week and trying to juggle work. In the end however, I was able to get the draft completed, and handled over to my team to be peer reviewed. I also got to peer review the drafts of two of my team members and was able to gain an insight on different industries.

  1. Hi, Zach.

Looking at your weekly activity log, it's good that you've set aside time to work on the industry analysis outline, but I think you could have added more details to the blank slots. You mentioned that creating a schedule is one of your weaker areas, so filling in more of the activity log could have been a beneficial exercise. However, I think the main purpose of the activity log was to force you to be intentional about how you plan to spend each block of time, which is every 15 minutes for your log. If that felt too tedious, you could have increased the time increments to 30 minutes or even one hour. The ultimate goal was to record your activities in the log so that they serve as useful reminders of how you should be spending your time throughout the day. Of course, schedules will be subject to change, but at least you have something to reference.
